Mohawk Summer Meet Kicks Off With A Bang!

Campbellville, May 14, 2007...The 105-day Mohawk Racetrack summer meet, which kicks off this Thursday night, May 17, will host Canada’s richest harness race, the $1.5 million North America Cup, for the first time.
In addition to the outstanding event, which features the world’s finest three-year-old pacers, a driver autograph session, free live entertainment and a free handicapping seminar will be offered on Saturday, June 16.
The North America Cup is not the only highlight of the summer session, which features a nightly post-time of 7:20 p.m., Thursday through Monday, until October 8.
Saturday night, May 19, is Admirals Express night as Mohawk will honour the horse fondly dubbed the “Grey Gladiator” for his outstanding career. Fans can meet Canada’s 2005 Horse of the Year from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., along with trainer Mike Hales and driver Paul MacDonell at a Free poster signing. The first 500 customers will receive a $5 betting voucher. Admirals Express will also lead a post parade and be officially retired in a winner’s circle ceremony.
Sunday night, May 20 will mark the return of Family Fireworks Night, a Mohawk favourite. Free face painting, pony rides, special discount meals and plenty more for the kids is on tap, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Post time will also be early at 6:15 p.m., with fireworks to follow the races.
“Mohawk and all the amenities it has to offer for both customers and horse people, has proven to be ideally suited to summer racing, so we’re pleased to be extending the meet by 25 dates this year,” said Bruce Murray, Vice-President of Standardbred Racing. “We’re especially excited with the opportunity to showcase our signature event the Pepsi North America Cup in this atmosphere.”
Other special promotions include the Summer Night Concert Series, in which fans can enjoy live music performances for 10 consecutive Sunday nights from Canada Day to Labour Day, and Maple Leaf Alumni Night, which is set for Saturday, September 15.
New racing seminars will also be featured on major stakes nights. Greg Blanchard and Mike Hamilton will conduct the sessions and host a special guest from the racing community on May 19, June 16, August 18, September 1 and September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Also, some of the sport's biggest stakes races are scheduled, beginning with the 65th edition of the Canadian Pacing Derby on Saturday, August 18. The line-up also includes the Metro Pace (September 1), the Breeders Crown for older horses (September 1), Maple Leaf Trot (September 15) and Canadian Trotting Classic (September 15).
