Longtimeplayer - very good question - and the answer is really up to the individual. From my experience I have purchased older raceway horses from sales, claimed a few, purchased through private sales and most recently have a 2 yr old in training the I was bred by a mare I own.
Through a private sale you can have the vet go over the horse and that should reduce the chance of surprises, at horse sales you can go to the barns and inspect a horse, and to claim at a large majority of tracks it is without inspection. With a claim or sale you will most likely have one that can drop in the box right away. Though not a chance for a home run it is better than a strike out.
For example My 2 yr old ( I still want to say yearling) is sired by On The Attack out of a Nobleland Sam mare . He has been broke and and jogging for 3 months and will not start to train down for at least another - total investment so far is about $25,000 with at least another $5,000 before I even know if he will make it to the races.
With claimers if not happy with then drop them to a class they can make money or will sell and cut your loses as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the input Jay. In the process now of looking for a trainer, got a couple in mind. We are definetly going to look at all aspects. The Morrisville sale in Sept. has some really good bred yearlings that don't go too highly priced, giving that some consideration as well. Green Day for example was a $6,000 yearling, Artistic Fella went for $13,000. Kind of the $1.00 and a dream type thinking.

The babies there get great care from the students and I think thta goes a long way toward their success--plus it is a small, off the beaten path sale, so prices tend to be good.

Tautog
I also remember those great nights at Roosevelt and Yonkers. If you're interested, there is a great site with comments from fans, drivers and employees. It's called "Memorial to Roosevelt Raceway". I'd post the link, but I'm so bad with computers Im lucky that I can post this. Just google Roosevelt Raceway. It doesn't seem to work with the other engines. You mentioned Harness Eye recently, perhaps you can post Pandy's Sharp Horses for our friends without access to Harness Eye. If you went to Roosevelt from the mid 70's till the end, we probably crossed paths. Enjoy the site-it sure brought back some good memories for me. Good luck.

I'm so old I remember the first numbers from the trifecta (only 1 back then) on the last race there 3-8-1 not sure of the exact order. Going to check out the site for sure. I would glady post the sharp horse till Harness Eye gives me a cease and desist order that will be coming lol. Email might be a much better choice. Do you want them from all tracks or just NF? I put them in my virtual stable just for reference they haven't been doing very well lately. Keep them there for 2 weeks and then clear it out. The people on here are really sharp I don't spend a lot of time handicapping as I play angles and a limited amount of races. I love reading Jay's comments on each race it must take an awful lot of time to do that. I appreciate the effort. Plus my hats off to everyone for making this such an entertaining board. I've been on the net since 92 and usually wind up seeing lots of arguments not a single one here. I'm done bantering for the day ;D

I have the list all typed up but will not post it till I get permission from the board owner or owners. I've been doing this long enough that it could cause "issues" and that's the last thing I want to do here.

You guys sort this out I just wish Harness Eye would go on the net like trackmaster they would probably make some bucks doing it. Listening Keith? I mean you can't even buy it out there every sale would be a new customer without the delivery costs or sharing it with a newspaper distributor . Without giving out too much info I will say a certain owners horse who posts all the time is on that list.

Tautog - I agree- I would most likely subscribe unless the price was ridicules. When I visit the old stomping grounds I go out of my way to buy one. I do not know if it is just because of nostalgia but when I go back east the first 2 things I buy is a harnesseye and a Star ledger - one of the few newspapers that still do justice harness racing.

Daily Racing Form, which owns it, says we must sell a minimum of twelve copies, with no return credits. When we had it in the past , we sold about 3. If enough people make definite commitments to buy it from us, I will talk to our programs/admission people.

Keith,
The Racing Form is online why can't Harness Eye be? Maybe you can suggest a trial run at least with hot trainers and drivers, horses to watch and your column of course ;D Maybe $12 a year till they see how many subscribers they get. It won't have the programs in it so the costs will be minimal. It's a way to get a foot in the door.
One day at Yonkers I saw a guy with all flat programs printed out he said it cost him $365 a year he would never go back. My guess is he prints it at the office because of the printing costs. But this is where it's coming to down the road especially with the younger people. I already have programs for some tracks on Sunday and Monday how can I beat that?
They could even advertise in your local program just to get people's interest up. Just one mans opinion.
