What is the rule in Ohio in terms of how close to race time you can drop a claim in the box? I know when claiming in Michigan we've been able to do it like 15 minutes before post time and the claim needs to be approved by the judges. Generally speaking I like the idea of announcing the claims prior to race time. I do know some 'strange things' can happen, however. Some owners/trainers/drivers will intentionally foul up the works and abuse a horse that is in to be claimed while others just go for the gusto and try for a nice check if not the win. Personally, I think it stinks to mishandle the horse just because somebody is claiming the animal. Its part of the game. A claiming race puts the horse up for sale - pure and simple. Gotta live with the result. Can't stomach the thought of a horse being claimed? Don't enter in a claimer. I've seen it happen in both Michigan and Ohio and have heard of it elsewhere where yelling and screaming goes on and new owners or trainers are belittled and treated badly by those having a horse claimed from them.

I've seen it happen in both Michigan and Ohio and have heard of it elsewhere where yelling and screaming goes on and new owners or trainers are belittled and treated badly by those having a horse claimed from them. Happened to me years ago. KK Sr claimed a horse off of Dan Ross on a fri night. That Monday KK Sr and I claimed another from Dan Ross. This time Ross knew about the claim. I was at the paddock to pick up the horse anyway Eidens had the rail and Ross had the 4 hole. Both left and at the 1/4 pole you could have put TWO SEMI's in the hole. Danny wouldn't take it. FINALLY at the half he puts him in the two hole. Naturally both horses were distanced. When I picked up the horse Danny's grooms were PO'D. Keith put in my name to pick up the horse and as the paddock judge were measuring the hopples and equip. one of Danny's grooms was saying choice four letters words to her. I got a phone call at home from the judges asking me to come in for a hearing. They called in Ross about his drive(they did nothing to him) then they called in the groom. I went in the judges office alone and they asked me if Ross's groom indeed swore at the paddock judge. (I got along with Danny for years) I told them no I didn't hear him swear to her. The groom didn't get fined. So I guess it depends on who is claiming from who on whether you get a clean drive or let's gut this horse drive.
