As several of our more successful board members have pointed out, watching the horses warm up can be an effective part of the handicapping process. Case in point: The first race on Wednesday night. The #4 horse Bo Rocki looked like a solid bet coming off a nice county fair win with a good closing quarter of 29.4. He was the most experienced trotter in the race, had a good trotting trainer (Charlie Williams) and Northfield's #1 driver. The only negative pointing against him was two consecutive races in July, where he broke stride.
The public had wagered Bo Rocki down to about co-favorite status with the #6 and the #5, the only two trotters WITHOUT any breaks in their past performance lines.
During the post parade, Bo Rocki was galloping as the horses paraded past the grandstand with Aaron Merriman having trouble controlling him. That's all I had to see, as I loaded up on the #6 and #5 in exacta boxes and trifecta keys. While they did not pay much, they paid better than the zero I would have collected by wagering on Bo Rocki.
As everyone who saw the race can attest, Bo Rocki galloped the entire mile, with Aaron either unable to wrest control or just letting the headstrong beast wear himself out.
