Just a little fun here. As we all have experienced, just when we think we have that superfecta nailed or some other sure bet, along comes an unexpected contender, usually driven by an inconsistent driver, to screw up our wager. Thoughout the years, I have been burned by Keith Kash more times than I can count. When I include him, he burns me. When I omit him, he burns me. And yes, Kash Sr did win a driving title at Northfield... as I remember it was at a winter meet, many years ago.

I voted for Pat Melloy, Jr. Pat is a very good horseman and is a better driver than we give him credit for (Not Matt, Aaron, Ryan, Wyatt, et al) but decent. As a trainer-driver, instead of a catch driver, he tends to be more conservative, looking to be sure to get a check (and keeping his horses sound and racing) and less concerned with wins. When he knows his horse is good, he will be more aggressive. I can't seem to cacth him at the right time. Of course his ROI is 99%, so I should just bet him every start. Only Crist Hershberger is better among the top 25 guys.

If I recall correctly, Pat his lit up the board several times with Count Masone.

As Longshot Mike can attest to the last time I was at Northfield; Joey Mapes is the guy who too often has me pounding my fist on a table in frustration. In my Fall, 2007 Northfield visit I was watching a race with Longshot Mike and Jay near the finish line. I was having a moderate losing night when a late trifecta came up. I liked a couple of longer shots to be first and second. As a rule I prefer wheeling a trifecta rather than playing two horses I like just in an exacta box. Well, in order to run the trifecta I needed to break my last big bill in the wallet. If I left one horse off for third I had enough on my voucher to cover the bet. Naturally I left only Mapes off the ticket in the show position and saw him gamely get up at about 50-1 to crush my spirits. I wheel about 95% of my trifecta bets and it honestly seems as if I'm always wasting money on Mapes from an outside post. Later that same evening I used my last $20 to play the late double. I used a single in the 12th which won at a nice price of about 10-1. I had five live $4.00 doubles in the final race and three of them were paying enough to get me back to around even for the night. It was a blanket finish and who came up the passing lane from last at the 3/4 pole to win but Joey Mapes. I almost dropped. I was standing near the winners circle with Longshot Mike and Jay when Mapes came in for the picture. Jay yelled out jokingly to Joey "Hey, why didn't you tell us you were that alive at those odd?" Mapes replied back in a serious tone of voice, "Hell, even I didn't think I was alive." Perfect way to end the evening.
I'll be back in a couple of months and I'm sure either Mapes will suck money from me all night as I'll include him on every ticket and he won't be anywhere near the top or again I'll save a couple of dollars and not include him only to see him drive up gamely to get me at the wire.

If I were to vote, I would say "other" and then proceed to write a whole book about it. ;D In terms of Kash Sr. - Remember horses like Miss Judy Comfort and one of my personal faves..."Passin Kash"?
