Has Northfield ever entertained the idea of a 50 cent Pick 4 or 5? With my limited bankroll (military pay ) and my love for the Pick 4, I would love for Northfield to adopt it! Does it not make economic sense for Northfield? Thanks in adavance Jon

Jon:
My hometown track; Buffalo Raceway, added the 50 cent pick four this meet and much to my surprise it has been a success. More people are playing it and the handle is higher for that bet than when it was a $1 minimum. In fact the 50 cent pick four has been so popular that a second pick four was been added to each racing card. I've been told that the pick four handle has increased from the $1500 range in handle to the $2500 range with the betting minimum decrease.
My guess is that Northfield wouldn't be interested as it benefits them when the pick four is not hit and there is a carryover. The carryover generates significant interest and has a multiplier effect on the pool. If there is a rare two day carryover then the pools are Meadowlands like. The odds of a carryover pick four pool with a 50 cent minimum bet is significantly diminished as many who wager will cover more combinations.
At Buffalo Raceway they did not have carryovers but rather paid; and still do pay, 3 of 4 if the pick four is not hit. Surprisingly it does happen. Last Friday I played the Buffalo Raceway pick four and two favorites and two longshots came in. I had 3 of 4 but interestingly missed on one of the favorites. If I'd have used the favorite I would have had the entire pool, as it was I collected $33 for my 3 of 4 wager. By the way the favorite I didn't use was a Troy Boring horse. The horse was 5-2 morning line but had not been first or second all year. Second time in this lower class but in previous weeks could do no better than 3rd with Fisher, Jr and Kakaley. I couldn't see the horse winning this week with Yuk....errr.....Boring. I showed them how smart I was by saving $6.00 on my pick four bet by not using Boring. Sure it cost my a couple of thousand by not having the whole pool but at least I stuck to my guns.
Sigh - Jim

Sigh - Jim Sticking by one's principles always has a cost, but sometimes not as easily calculated [see post about Blevins].
