Friday Night, January 1, 2010 Recap: With snow falling and the temperature in the teens, the Fillies and Mares went postward last night to inaugurate another year of racing at Northfield Park. There was lots of chalk, a handful of scratches and just a few winners for the five handicappers who took aim at last night's program. Everyone took a net loss on the evening, but the Trackrat came closest to a profit, garnering $290 (25 x $11.60) on his first race $50 exacta box, using the winner, #3 OK Spice with #7 Cold Kiss. His attempt to solve the Pick Five was nipped in the bud when #2 Winsmith Rachel captured the second leg at 9-1 odds.
Therealmuljuice collected $115.40 on his $2 trifecta box in the thirteenth race, while The Believer cashed two $20 exactas, one in the third race and the other in the seventh race, both for $80 (10 x $8.00).
We're back at it again tonight, with more cold, more snow and more wind. Giss, keep that hot chocolate machine tuned up.
We welcome Harness27 to our monthly contest and remind everyone reading our board that THEY are also welcome to participate. Just contact The Believer or myself and we'll plug you in. You must, however, join the board.

Saturday Night, January 2, 2010 Recap: Collectively, the handicapping crew seemed to like the fourth race wagering opportunities, as four of our cappers cashed winning tickets in that $5000 claiming event, which was won by #2 Gold Dust Mike. The Believer and Therealmuljuice cashed $10 trifectas worth $150 (5 x $30), while Scojer cashed a $4 trifecta ($60) and a $10 exacta ($58) in that closely contested pace. Harness27 cashed a $10 place wager worth $15 (5 x $3).
The Believer also cashed a $10 trifecta in the seventh race for $206 (5 x $41.20), while Scojer added a $50 place wager on #9 Expresso Forte in the eighth race, worth another $100 (25 x $4.00). Kangaroox nailed a $25 exacta in the second race for $427.50 (12.5 x $34.20). Finally, Jimhorseman cashed three $50 place wagers in the third, ninth and fourteenth races for a total of $310 in winnings.
With all those winning wagers, no one posted a net profit for the second night in a row. We'll be back at it Monday night with more cold, more snow and more of Northfield's best handicapping. Good luck to everyone.

Monday Night, January 4, 2010 Recap: Conservative betting strategies seemed to work the best last night as three of our handicapping crew made nice profits on less than the maximum nightly outlay. Therealmuljuice did the best, cashing a $1 trifecta in the seventh race for $1383.60 and then coming back in the eleventh with a $10 trifecta box worth $169, for a total of $1552.60 in winnings. His key horse in the seventh race was #5 Look Both Ways (8-1) with Elliott Deaton in the sulky. His trifecta in the eleventh include the ultra-consistent pair Krissy K and Ilooklikevada with another Deaton horse, Let's Not Lock It.
November contest winner Cliff fashioned a successful $1 superfecta wager in the fourth race for $410, while The Believer boxed his superfecta win in the thirteenth race for $566.70. Ryan Stahl drove Goatcoat George TM to the fourth race win in 159.3 for trainer Kim Sloan. Robin Miller drove the thirteenth race winner, CJ Blaze for missing driver Dan Charlino.
Kangaroox went to the cashier's windows twice, the first time with a $10 exacta in the third race worth $91 (5 x $18.20) and then in the twelfth race with a $25 exacta worth $170 (12.5 x $13.60). The lead horses in those two races were Bodandy Andy and Misty's Dignity, respectively.
Trackrat cashed his only two wagers, a $2 trifecta box in the third race for $166.40 and a $1 trifecta key wager in the fourth race for $61.70. Scojer's $50 WP wager on #4 ECK in the tenth race returned $230 (25 x $9.20 composite).
We welcome a new player to our monthly contest tonight when Gallo Bluechip joins the handicapping fray. Good luck to everyone on what looks to be ANOTHER snowing evening with 4-6 inches of new snow during the day and temperatures in the teens tonight at post time.

Tuesday Night, January 5, 2010 Recap: Staying with conservative wagering strategies, the contestants who put up the least amount of money last night got the most money in return. Cliff (Gregory) converted his $50 late daily double wager into $1355 when #3 Eternal N won the 13th race and #2 Hustler Hank captured the evening finale, paying $54.20 on a $2 wager. Hustler Hank was a 12-1 morning line longshot that eventually went off at 5-1.
The Believer's $20 exacta in the tenth race, combining #9 She's All Country with #1 Attack on the Town resulted in winnings of $442 (10 x $44.20). Jimhorseman used #4 My Claudette over #3 Lipey to collect $568 from his $20 exacta in the sixth race (10 x $56.80).
Therealmuljuice hung onto his early January lead by cashing a $1 trifecta in the sixth race for $150.30, giving him a $53 lead over the reigning (November) champion Cliff.
With thirty minutes to post time on Wednesday night, we're experiencing a light freezing rain in the Cleveland area. Don't see it affecting the racing too much but it might cause some travel scratches. Good luck and stay safe if you're going to the Home of the Flying Turns tonight.

Wednesday Night, January 6, 2010 Recap: Three contestants cashed winning wagers Wednesday night, but only two turned a profit on the evening card. The Believer cashed two $10 exactas good for $146 and $75, respectively, from the tenth and thirteenth races. The Believer also had a $6 trifecta in the thirteenth for $78 (3 x $26). Trackrat had a $1 trifecta in the eleventh race for $138.80 and a $2 trifecta in the twelfth race for $116. Jimhorseman's $50 place wager on #1 Townline Powerful in the tenth race was good for $60 (25 x $2.40).
In the "just missed" department, Cliff just missed the Pick Five and then just missed the late Pick Three.
Good luck to everyone on Friday night's Fillies and Mares program. Post time temperature should be around 20 degrees with snow in the air (and on the ground, duh!).

Wednesday Night, January 6, 2010 Recap: In the "just missed" department, Cliff just missed the Pick Five and then just missed the late Pick Three. Since you brought it up - my contest wager had a typo, in the last leg I typed a "2" instead of a "3'. I was pressed for time and didn't check myself. Fortunately, I did get it right when it counted, so I could count it in my wallet if not in the contest. As far as the pick3 goes, I was sure Madelinot was set to win one with Charlino. Oh well.

Friday Night, January 8, 2010 Recap: This handicapping game is easy. Eliminate the pretenders and pound the contenders. Cliff did that last night, on a limited basis. His $50 straight early daily double produced $200 in winnings (25 x $8.00), while his $20 early Pick Three, another "straight" wager, produced an additional $324 in winnings (10 x $32.40).
Jimhorseman was the big winner last night, cashing a $5 trifecta key ticket in the eighth race for $874.50 (2.5 x $349.80), using #4 Wildfire Osborne on top. The Jerome Osborne stable has certainly provided a lot of Northfield winners over the years.
The snow has stopped (for now) but it's 19 degrees with 45 minutes to the alleged post time (lol). Good luck to everyone on the Saturday night card.

Saturday Night, January 9, 2010 Recap: The handicapping contest lead changed hands for the third time in seven racing programs in 2010, when The Believer cashed a $10 key trifecta wager in the fifth race for $1720 (5 x $344).
Other successful wagers Saturday night included two $1 trifectas by Therealmuljuice for a combined $194.20; a $35 exacta by Kangaroox for $206.50 (17.5 x $11.80); and a $2 trifecta by Trackrat for $50.60.
Racing resumes tonight with about an inch of new snow. Temperatures in the teens. Brrrr...

Monday Night, January 11, 2010 Recap: The paranormal anti-handicapping forces were all aligned last night as the master of anti-cappers himself, Trackrat, was the only board member to scamper up to the cashier's window, not once, but twice. Both of his winners and all four of his wagers were $1 trifecta key wagers isolating one horse on the top of the ticket and the rest of the field in place and show. In the seventh race, his 1/all/all ticket paid $23.70, while his identical wager in the eighth race paid a tidy $830. The eighth race finish featured 2-1 Happy Time on top, with 24-1 Tieler Bea Hotspur second and 79-1 Western Eddie third.
Regular handicapping forces should return for Tuesday night's card, which features thirteen races, some flurries in the air and temperatures in the low 20s, a warming trend. Aaron Merriman and Ryan Stahl are here. Deaton and Charlino are not. Good luck and stay safe on the roads.

Tuesday Night, January 12, 2010 Recap: There are a lot of bridges along the I-271 corridor that leads to Northfield Park and underneath one of those bridges one might find the bettor who tossed $10,000 to show on #9 Yiannoulous Boy in the tenth race last night, only to see that overwhelming favorite finish sixth by 15 and 1/2 lengths. After watching the replay on Betharness, the 4-year-old Rick Redder trained gelding was never in it. As noted elsewhere on this site, the show payoffs were huge.
Back to our contest. Our crew didn't have much success on what Cliff calls "Terrible Tuesday", with only six successful wagers and only newcomer Harness27 posting a meager $4 profit on the night.
With Cliff in a temporary slump, the Believer sits atop the leader board with $3889.70, Cliff in second with $3137.00 and Therealmuljuice at $3114.10. Still plenty of wagering left in this contest.

Wednesday Night, January 13, 2010 Recap: Teetering on the edge of contest elimination, Kangaroox went "all in" on Wednesday night, but was able to re-supply his bankroll with a $25 exacta in the fourth race worth $1275 (12.5 x $102.00). Despite showing super-sharp form for the past month, #5 Riverboat Baby went off at 13-1 with Robin Miller in the bike, and dominated the field by six lengths in a life-time best of 157.1. The early pacesetter, #4 Vilas Blue Chip held on for second.
Cliff, who has been "just missing" his Pick wagers, did not miss the Pick Four Wednesday night as his $48 combination posted a return of $617.50 when the 3-2-3-1 horses won the eighth through eleventh races. Although the last two legs were won by the betting favorites, the first two legs were captured by 7-1 choices, adding value to the exotic payout. Good handicapping, Cliff!! With his Pick Four success, Cliff regains the mid-January lead in our handicapping contest.
Heading into tonight's (Friday) program, a misty rain is expected in the Cleveland area all day and evening with temperatures in the thirties. A thawing/damp track seems to be the order of the day. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

Friday Night, January 15, 2010 Recap: It appears that the computer algorithms are being validated at the cashier's window with Cliff padding his contest lead last night, collecting $813 in wagers against his $344 outlay. Cliff's successful wagers were a $100 win ticket on #7 She's All Country in the fifth race for $330 (50 x $6.60) and a $10 late Pick Three worth $483 (5 x $96.60).
The Believer converted $10 exacta and trifecta boxes on the 2-3-4 horses in the seventh race for $102 and $273, respectively. Jimhorseman had a $2 trifecta in the eighth race for $52 and a $20 exacta box in the eleventh race for $54 (10 x $5.40). Therealmuljuice had a $2 trifecta in the fourth race for $114.80 and $1 trifectas in the fifth and eighth races for $64 and $26, respectively. Finally, Trackrat cashed a $5 trifecta in the twelfth race for $134.50 (2.5 x $53.80).
We're looking at cloudy weather with race time temperatures in the thirties for the next week or so. Good luck and stay safe.

Saturday Night, January 16, 2010 Recap: Last night saw four of our hardcore handicapping crew enjoying multiple trips to the cashier's window, with three posting profits and the fourth one just about breaking even. The usually conservative Therealmuljuice upped the ante last night, placing two $100 wagers and collecting both of them, a daily double worth $360 (50 x $7.20) and the fourth race exacta worth $590 (50 x $11.80). Both wagers included drivers Aaron Merriman and Dan Charlino, a recurring theme at Northfield if you want to make any money.
Cliff also hit the early daily double, with his $50 wager bringing home $180. His tenth race $100 win wager on #9 Here's Hooter produced $390 in winnings (50 x $7.80) and his $1 superfecta in the same race was worth another $99.30. Trackrat cashed two $1 trifecta wagers, one in the fourth race for $29.80 and the second one in the eighth race for $485.50. Finally, The Believer cashed a $5 trifecta in the first race for $118.50 (2.5 x $47.40) and a $10 trifecta in the second race for $324 (5 x $64.80).
Driver Ken Koch, who used to be an afterthought in MY handicapping analyses, picked up three wins and two thirds last night, joining Aaron Merriman with four winners and the duo of Dan Charlino and Elliott Deaton with three each. Koch, unlike that OTHER driver with a K_ _ h in his name, cannot be dismissed without careful consideration.
Good luck to everyone on Monday night's card. Looks like we won't see the sun in Cleveland for a while. Fizz!!

Monday Night, January 18, 2010 Recap: It was ugly last night. With over $1,9000 in contest wagers posted, Therealmuljuice was the only one of five participating cappers to turn a profit and that profit was a single dollar bill ($1.00). Back to the drawing board for Terrible Tuesday.
Only six weeks to Spring Training. Go Tribe!!
