Tuesday Night, January 19, 2010 Recap: It's a tough night of handicapping when Beau Blevins wins two races in one program and the namesake of Maverick's English cousin did just that Tuesday night, capturing the fifth race with pacer Misty Mystique and the seventh race with trotter Final Scorpion. Still, our two premier handicappers, Cliff and the Believer, were both able to post profits on the night as they continue their head-to-head battle for the January handicapping crown. The Believer cashed a $5 trifecta ticket in the fourth race for $292 (2.5 x $116.80) and $10 worth of trifecta tickets in the seventh race for another $548 (5 x $109.60). Cliff struck late in the program, cashing a $100 win ticket on #7 Brother Bud in the thirteenth race (50 x $4.00) while also using "Bud" at the front end of a $20 late daily double worth $144 (10 x $14.40).
Scojer's $100PS wager on John Green's green 4-year-old trotter Shekinah Glory in the first race paid $660 (50 x composite $13.20). Therealmuljuice cashed a $1 trifecta box ticket in the same race for $153.10.
Weatherwise, it will be cloudy and cold today, with a few flurries in the air this morning. Post time temperatures in the 20s. Good weather for one of Northfield's GREAT hot chocolates. Good luck and stay safe.

Wednesday Night, January 20, 2010 Recap: Top tier drivers Aaron Merriman and Elliott Deaton continue to lead the way to the winner's circle as they combined for eight wins on last night's fourteen-race program. A beginning handicapper would be wise to give those two drivers (and Dan Charlino and Ryan Stahl) a good look when considering a wager at Northfield Park. In our contest, Trackrat liked the inside horses (1-2-3) in the fifth race and that affection was rewarded with a $50 exacta for $645 (25 x $25.80) and a $10 trifecta for $460 (5 x $92). He added a $1 trifecta in the eighth race for $167.30 for a winnings total of $1272.30 on the night.
Cliff cashed a $60 win ticket on #4 Rabbitman in the second race for $144 (30 x $4.80) and a $100 win ticket on #4 Vaniscape in the sixth race for $170 (50 x $3.40). Therealmuljuice hit a $1 trifecta in the tenth race for $411.90, while The Believer had a $5 exacta in the sixth race for $40.50 (2.5 x $16.20).
Looking ahead to Friday, warmer post time temperature in the mid to upper 30s, no rain or snow expected. Good luck and stay safe.

Friday Night, January 22, 2010 Recap: Fillies and Mares night started with a Deaton daily double and ended with a Deaton daily double as driver Elliott Deaton captured both ends of the early and late daily doubles at Northfield and added two other victories to tally six wins on the evening. Two of those victories came aboard ladies trained by Elliott, boosting his red hot training numbers early in 2010.
In our contest, Trackrat continues his resurgence with $1111.70 in winnings last night, inching towards Therealmuljuice's third place standing and membership in the $3K Club. The Believer reclaims the contest lead over Cliff. And Jimhorseman taps out.
Good luck to everyone on Saturday night's card. All the top tier drivers are here tonight. A great chance to make money and have fun!!

Saturday Night, January 24, 2010 Recap: Handicapping board patriarch The Believer put some distance between himself and the guru of Northfield handicapping Cliff (Gregory) in this month's contest with a stellar performance at the windows last night. The Believer cashed a $2 trifecta for $1058.60, two $5 trifectas for $239 and $129.50, respectively, and a $10 exacta for $72, giving him $1499.10 in winnings on the fourteen race program. He extends his lead over Cliff by $1300.
In the words of Longshot Mike, sooner or later, you are going to get Mapsed. That happened to Cliff last night in the fifth leg of the Pick Five. Cliff's ticket was alive until Joey Mapes won the seventh race with #4 Expresso Forte. Cliff's three selections in the seventh finished right behind Mapes. The Pick Five paid $2300. Although Cliff's picks (2-3-5) were lower odds, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that Cliff's ticket would have paid over $1000.
Therealmuljuice continues to tread water in third place, picking up $374.20 on his $400 outlay. He cashed a $50 exacta in the second race for $305 (25 x $12.20) and a $2 trifecta in the third race for $69.20.
Enjoy the NFL playoff games today and we'll see you right back here on Monday night. Stay warm and stay safe.

Monday Night, January 25, 2010 Recap: Winter returned to Northfield on Monday night as an arctic wind lowered the daytime temperatures from the high 40s early in the morning to the low 20s at post time. While the climate was cooling off, Cliff was heating up, posting seven winning wagers worth $1070.60 in handicapping cash. Cliff had $50 win tickets in the third, sixth and seventh races for $95, $170 and $105; and $2 trifectas in the third and sixth races for $31 and $52.20; a $1 superfecta in the seventh race for $372.40 and a $50 late daily double for $245. Cliff's Monday night madness cut the Believer's lead by about half. But The Believer wasn't sitting on his thumbs last night reading Scottish poetry. He cashed three $10 exactas for a total of $329, a net gain over his $200 outlay.
Therealmuljuice went to the cashier's window four times last night but his $298.70 in cumulative chalk failed to cover his $390 wagering investment. Trackrat cashed a $2 trifecta in the fourth race for $32.40, about the price of 4 lbs of cheap swiss cheese or thirteen GREAT hot chocolates at Northfield.
Heading into Tuesday night's card, we have a light dusting of snow and no significant accumulation in sight. Temperatures will remain in the twenties. Good luck and stay safe.

Tuesday Night, January 26, 2010 Recap: It only took two days of racing for The Believer's $1300 lead over Cliff to disappear into the bleak winter horizon in Northern Ohio as Cliff reclaims the January contest lead with $1490.60 in winning tickets, including: a $100 win ticket on #2 Hoosier Hank in the eighth race worth $190, $4 worth of winning Pick Four tickets worth $325.60 and a $50 late daily double worth $975. The Believer covered his wagering outlay with a $1 trifecta in the second race for $59.80, $4 worth of trifecta win tickets in the eighth race for $124.40 and a $1 trifecta in the tenth race that paid $20.70 after tallying both trifecta payouts from a dead heat for second. This battle looks like it's going down to the wire with only three racing programs left this month.
Therealmuljuice is in a downward spiral, cashing $20.70 from the tenth race trifecta after putting up $306 in wagers for the night.
Good luck to everyone on Wednesday night's card. Temperature is in the 20s but there is a VERY strong southern wind (25-30MPH) that the horses will be racing into as they head for home.

Wednesday Night, January 27, 2010 Recap: With post time temperatures below freezing, veteran driver Robin Miller lit up the tote board last night with two consecutive 30-1 shots in the eighth and ninth races last night, triggering big exotic wagering payouts. But not for us!
Trackrat cashed a $50 exacta in the fifth race for $605 (25 x $24.20), while Therealmuljuice cashed a $1 trifecta in the second race for $55.20 and a $10 trifecta in the fourth race for $452 (5 x $90.40). Cliff cashed a $50 win ticket on #1 Just Qui in the seventh race for $155 (25 x $6.20). The Believer cashed a $2 trifecta in the eleventh race for $291.20.
Good luck to everyone on Friday night's Fillies & Mares program. It's going down to zero tonight and only warming to the teens tomorrow, so stay warm and stay safe.

Friday Night, January 29, 2010 Recap: There were a couple of modest ROIs last night but nothing to slow down Cliff (Gregory), who is seeking his fifth Northfield monthly handicapping crown and second in a row. Speaking of Cliff, he cashed a $5 Pick Four last night for $225 (2.5 x $90) by virtue of a late scratch in the eighth race that was counted as an alternate in the first leg. He also cashed a $50 late daily double for $205 (25 x $8.20).
Trackrat had a $1 trifecta box in the third race for $194.80 and a $50 exacta in the seventh race for $410 (25 x $16.40) for a total of $604.80 on the night. Therealmuljuice had $1 trifectas in the sixth and tenth races for $81.70 and $93.30 and a $50 exacta in the eleventh race for $165. The Believer misfired all night but did have a $5 trifecta in the eleventh race for $58.
Tonight's finale to the January handicapping contest promises to be a cold one on the track and hopefully, a hot one at the windows as five contenders can still wager the nightly maximum of $500 as they chase Cliff for the crown. Good luck to everyone. Stay safe and stay warm.

Saturday Night, January 30, 2010 Recap: A week ago, The Believer sat atop the leader board with a $1300 lead over Cliff. With big wagering nights on Monday and Tuesday, Cliff regained the lead and held onto it through the final night of the January contest Saturday night. Cliff finished with $4947.00 to Taylor's $4470.40. There is very little that separates these two excellent handicappers as both now hold FIVE Northfield monthly handicapping crowns.
On the final night, Cliff cashed a $20 early daily double for $240 (10 x $24) while the Believer cashed a $20 late daily double for $354 (10 x $35.40). Trackrat had a $1 trifecta in the sixth race for $78.30 and Therealmuljuice had a $2 trifecta in the seventh race for $496.80.
We'll be right back at it on Monday night as another monthly handicapping contest begins right here. All board members are invited to join this FREE contest, where the only prize is bragging rights. Good luck, stay safe and stay warm.
