Fourth generation harness driver Jason Merriman, 17, of Pompano Beach, FL made his first pari mutuel victory as a harness driver a memorable one.
On Saturday (December 20) at Pompano Park Harness Track, Merriman won the seventh race $4900 trot with a 35-1 long shot, ICU Talkin, who paid $72.80 to win and $32.80 to place.
It was only the 26th career start for the home-schooled high school student who is the son of horsemen Terry and Robin Merriman, the grandson of ICU Talkin’s trainer, Gordon Norris.
ICU Talkin, a 4-Year-Old gelding by Keystone Nordic, took the lead away from Ditto (David Ingraham) after the opening quarter mile of the race and led throughout and won by one length in 1.59.3 for his 10th victory this year.
Ditto was second with Rompaway Quiver (Kevin Wallis) third.
“I had a decent lead coming down the stretch.” Merriman said.
“But I didn’t know if we could hang on all the way. What a relief when we crossed the wire and I knew I won my first race. It was great.
“I’ve always wanted to drive ever since I can remember.” Merriman added.“I want to be a catch driver when I am done with high school. Both my grandpa’s, dad and especially my mom have been teaching me.
"Mom and Dad have been very strict that I have to finish school and stay out of trouble if I want to drive horses."
“I can remember at an early age he was always around the horses and liked it.” said grand father Gordon Norris.
“When he was eight or nine he use to lean a race bike up on the fence, hang a bridle and lines too, sit in the bike and make believe he was driving in a race.”
Merriman, at age 17, is old enough to drive, as a professional but is still too young to bet.
“We had a lot of horses in tonight.” Merriman said.
“So everyone was very busy tonight and no one made a bet on the race. We did laugh about it in the winner’s circle.”
