Monday Night, March 1, 2010 Recap: New month, same results. The weekday racing at Northfield remains a challenge even for our sharp handicappers, as only Therealmuljuice can fashion a profit (and a small one at that) on the first night of racing in March. Muley hit a $10 early daily double for $130 (5 x $26) and came back with a $1 trifecta in the fifth race for $123.80. Jimhorseman, who seems to be SLOWLY regaining his handicapping touch, cashed a $50 WP wager in the third for $190 (25 x $7.60 composite) and a $40 place wager in the eleventh for $100 (25 x $4.00). Finally, Hundredtowin cashed one of his $100 win wagers in the twelfth race for $190 (50 x $3.80).
Good luck to everyone on Tuesday night's card. Stay safe and stay warm.

Tuesday Night, March 2, 2010 Recap: There was a flurry of virtual trips to the cashier's window Tuesday night as EVERY March handicapping contestant had at least one winning wager. Therealmuljuice led the way with $853 in winnings including a $10 early DD for $583 (5 x $116.60) and a $50 exacta in the eighth race for $270 (25 x $10.80). Scojer also liked the first race winner and his $50 win ticket produced $265 (25 x $10.60). Cliff had two $50 win wagers in the fifth and sixth races for $205 and $100, while Harness27 had two $10 place wagers in the third and fourth races for $22 and $12.
Kangaroox hammered the eighth race exacta forty times for $432 (40 x $10.80), while The Believer's $5 trifecta in the eleventh race was good for $83 (2.5 x $33.20). Hundredtowin cashed one of his five wagers, in the eighth race for $190 (50 x $3.80). And Jimhorseman collected $70 on his $50 place wager in the tenth race.
Trackrat, displaying early signs of senility, visited two different Cleveland area newstands yesterday looking for the Wednesday Northfield program, only to realize, after about 30 miles of driving, that Wednesday racing is over. However, if there had been racing, I would have made a fortune because I am in a zone right now. The Twilight Zone.
Good luck to everyone on Friday night's program.

Friday Night, March 5, 2010 Recap: A trio of contest cappers [Cliff, Trackrat and the Believer] all liked the chalk daily double of #1 Mom's A Hustler and #1 Silvers Luck and went to the cashier's window with $100, $50 and $20 winning tickets for $220, $110 and $44, respectively. The Believer added a $10 trifecta in the second race for another $93 (5 x $18.60) and a $30 trifecta ticket in the twelfth race for $393 (15 x $26.20).
Therealmuljuice missed the double but cashed $10 trifecta tickets in the second and third for $93 and $622, respectively and then added a tiny $1 trifecta in the sixth race for $13, giving him $715 in winnings for the night. Scojer's $100 P/S wager on #4 Mar-Bear in the ninth race produced $510 in winnings (50 x $10.20 composite).
Every now and then, trainer/owner John Brown's seven year old pacing mare Simply Don't simply does and last night she crushed a field of nondescript mares by nine lengths in the fourteenth race, paying $86.60. The ten cent superfecta paid $2336. The race for place and show was ugly with six horses within a length of each other.
Good luck to everyone on Saturday night's card.

Saturday Night, March 6, 2010 Recap: Not much wagering success to report from last night, as the group only had two winning tickets all evening. Trackrat had a $5 trifecta in the third race for $251.50 and Cliff had a successfull $1 superfecta in the seventh race for $331.90. Scojer placed a $100 WPS wager on the #9 in the ninth race where there were only seven horses in the field. His wager was cancelled and his account was adjusted for the nightly $50 minimum.
Racing resumes Monday night with a 14-race program. Good luck to everyone as Spring SLOWLY arrives in Northeast Ohio.

Monday Night, March 8, 2010 Recap: Thawing temperatures in Northeast Ohio did nothing for our handicapping acumen last night. The mediocre racing stock early in the week has been a consistent challenge for our handicappers and last night was no exception. Cliff hammered the late daily double for $210 (50 x $4.20), while The Believer cashed a $10 trifecta in the twelfth race for $101 (5 x $20.20) and Trackrat cashed a $1 trifecta in the sixth race for $85.40.
Mild weather will continue today (Tuesday) with no rain expected until after midnight. Good luck on tonight's fourteen race card.

Tuesday Night, March 9, 2010 Recap: Three trips to the cashier's window last night put the Trackrat far ahead of the field in the March handicapping contest. Trackrat cashed a $5 trifecta box in the third race for $247 (2.5 x $98.80), snuck back to the window in the fourth for a $1 trifecta worth $10.10 while saving his biggest hit for the seventh race. In the seventh, he keyed #7 Tally Ho Chip on top of the field in a $1 trifecta that paid $8599.20. With three early breakers in the field, including the favorite, A Joe, Tally Ho and driver JD Wengerd never looked back.
Therealmuljuice cashed a $1 trifecta in the first race for $175.70, while Hundredtowin had two $100 win wagers for $160 and $140 in the fifth and ninth races, respectively. Scojer's $100 place wager on #2 He Cantab You paid $110 (50 x $2.20), while Harness27's $10 WP wager on #3 in the tenth race was good for $11.
Live racing resumes Friday, March 12 with Fillies and Mares Night at Northfield. Good luck figuring out the ladies. Post time temperature should be around 50 with a threat of rain.

Friday Night, March 12, 2010 Recap: Driver Ryan Stahl took advantage of the absence of Northfield's top three drivers [Aaron Merriman, Elliott Deaton and Dan Charlino] on his way to recording eight wins, one second and one third in fourteen races on Friday night's Fillies and Mares program. Handicapper par excellence Cliff Gregory placed $10WPS wagers on every one of Stahl's horses and collected a total of $732 on the night. Trackrat remains smoking hot, cashing four of his five contest wagers for a return of $1287.80 on his $232 outlay. His bankroll climbs above $10,000.
The Believer cashed a $20 trifecta in the ninth race for $780 (10 x $78.00) while Jimhorseman cashed a $5 trifecta in the eighth race for $443.50 (2.5 x $177.40).
Looking ahead to Saturday night, rain is predicted for all day on Saturday and into the evening with temperatures dropping into the 40s by post time and heavy winds gusting to 35 mph. Good luck and stay safe.

Saturday Night, March 13, 2010 Recap: Last night, North American driving leader Aaron Merriman registered seven wins, four seconds and one third in answering Ryan Stahl's Friday night winning spree with one of his own. In our handicapping contest, only Cliff and Therealmuljuice had any success with the standardbreds. Cliff's $50 straight late Pick Three was worth $645 (25 x $25.80) while Therealmuljuice's $50 exacta (9-7) in the seventh race was worth $480 (25 x $19.20).
#6 Mr Bacciagalupe was scratched from the first race for failing the pre-race test. Trainer Jeff Maletz just recently returned from a previous 15 day suspension and has a history of prior violations. Look for a longer suspension this time.
Heading into the Ides of March, Trackrat holds a commanding lead in this month's handicapping contest with Cliff climbing into a distant second place. With the talent of our handicapping crew and half of the month left, no lead is safe, which Trackrat knows from losing last month's lead on the final weekend. Good luck to everyone on Monday's fourteen race program.

Monday Night, March 15, 2010 Recap: With a series of exacta boxes, Jimhorseman was the only contest capper to post a profit last night, getting back $576 on his $500 investment. Therealmuljuice keeps plugging along with his $1 trifecta keys which include the entire field. Not as lucky as the Irish, Muley cashed one trifecta wager in the third race for $135.10.
Good luck to everyone on tonight's program. The sun is supposed to shine today, with post-time temperatures in the mid to high 40s. Anyone see Elliott Deaton recently?

Tuesday Night, March 16, 2010 Recap: On the eve of St. Patrick's Day, Jim O'Horseman traded the "wearing of the green" for the collecting of the green, as he scored a $10 superfecta in the fourteenth race last night for $3274 (10 x $327.40). Jim used #4 Leach as his key horse, an unlikely choice given its recent 0 for 46 win record, but still good enough to beat this bottom level NW600 field.
Earlier in the program, Cliff collected $190 for his $100 win wager on #8 My Sweet Lorelei in the fifth race and Kangaroox cashed a $5 exacta ticket on #5 Silky Sailor over #6 CN Loufly Loretta, good for $292 (2.5 x $116.80).
With his superfecta success, Jim O'Horseman vaults over Cliff for second place in the March handicapping contest and takes aim at Trackrat, who still holds a comfortable lead.
The weather for today's annual St. Patrick's Day parade here in Cleveland will be 52 and sunny. Enjoy the corned beef and cabbage, drink responsibly, drive safely and we'll see everyone back here on Friday for Fillies and Mares Night.

Friday Night, March 19, 2010 Recap: For the second racing night in a row, Jimhorseman marched to the cashier's windows and collected over three grand. In last night's ninth race, Jim fashioned a $5 trifecta key wager that returned $3453.50 (2.5 x $1381.40) using #7 Jenabel with Dan Charlino in the sulky as his lead horse. After sitting eighth and last to the three quarter mark, Charlino came storming home in 28.4 to win a three-horse photo at the wire, over #3 JJs Request and #6 Betty Jack. Jimhorseman cut Trackrat's lead in half but the rodent STILL sits atop the leader board by $3K.
The Believer crafted a nice $15 trifecta key wager in the eighth race that paid $1434 (7.5 x $191.20), using#1 Peggy Spur over #5 Susannah Coe and #4 She's So Cool. Ken Koch, who several of us pointed out earlier in the week was good with trotters, urged the winner past the runnerup at the wire in 200.3.
Therealmuljuice also liked Jimhorseman's lead horse in the ninth, but only used her in a $1 key wager covering the rest of the field. His $42 adjusted wager returned $876.10. Cliff hit a $50 early daily double for $240 (25 x $9.60).
Looks like the handicapping contest is heating up, with seven programs left in March. Still plenty of time to catch the leader and four contenders have over $2500 left in their bankrolls. Good luck to everyone on what looks to be a dry but cool night of racing tonight.

Saturday Night, March 20, 2010 Recap: Trying to maintain a comfortable lead in the March handicapping contest, Trackrat struck early last night, cashing a $50 exacta in the first race for $630 and a $2 trifecta in the fourth race for $152.40 to boost his bankroll back above ten grand. The Believer posted a small profit on the night, cashing a $5 trifecta in the thirteenth race for $576, covering his $496 program outlay. Finally, Therealmuljuice cashed three winning wagers on the night, a $2 trifecta in the first race for $122.60, a $50 exacta in the third race for $160 and a $1 trifecta in the twelfth race for $17.10. Muley places a lot of bets, cashes a lot of tickets, but still lingers below the initial bankroll of $2500.
Looks like Spring is slowly posting a comeback in Northeast Ohio, with temperatures in the next week to hover in the low 50s with some chance of rain. Stay warm, stay dry and stay safe.

Monday Night, March 22, 2010 Recap: It's deja vu all over again. The Believer has begun his late month surge by hammering the twelfth race trifecta Monday night for $1948 (10 x $194.80). Jimhorseman posted a small net loss last night, cashing a $10 trifecta in the eighth race for $367 (5 x $73.40) but failing to cover his outlay of $400.
Trackrat cashed a $50 exacta in the tenth race good for $615 (25 x $24.60) to keep his bankroll above ten grand with five racing programs left this month.
Tuesday has started out as a miserable early Spring day with a continuous misting rain and temperatures just below 40 degrees. Good luck to everyone on tonight's card.

Tuesday Night, March 23, 2010 Recap: We've got a horse race developing in our handicapping contest as Cliff and The Believer post lucrative nights at the cashier's window, closing in fast on Trackrat and Jimhorseman. Cliff demonstrated the dual edged handicapping weapon of skill and luck in collecting $3421 for his Pick Five and Pick Four wagers. The skill was evident in crafting his winning wagers, while the luck came into play with a late scratch in the eighth race, giving Cliff a second winning Pick Four ticket. The Believer had $10 worth of winning superfecta tickets in the tenth race for $2160.
Therealmuljuice cashed a $5 trifecta box in the second race for $480 (2.5 x $192) and came right back in the third with a $1 trifecta worth $438.80. Jimhorseman's $10 exacta in the seventh race was worth $45, while his $20 worth of trifecta tickets in the eighth race was worth $294. Trackrat also hit the second race trifecta for $192 on a $2 ticket.
Approaching the final four race programs of the March contest, we have an unprecedented FOUR cappers with over $5000 in their bankrolls. Time for some serious handicapping!!
Good luck to everyone on Friday's Fillies and Mares program. The post time temperature will be in the mid 30s with a dry track.
