Coleman's Staff Win Big, Donate
November 30, 2006
Casie Coleman told Trot Insider in April that she'd purchased a horse for her grooms in lieu of a traditional Christmas bonus. Eight months later, she's turned an $18,000 claimer into a $90,000 bonus for her hard working staff.
Coleman put out $18,000 to purchase Sultan Of Suede in April, and told her staff that everything the horse earned through Dec. 1 would be theirs.
Since then, she's been through a total of five claimers - reinvesting each time - and her staff has seen their By A Mile Stables earn nearly $90,000.
"They made out way better than even I thought they would," Coleman told Trot Insider today. "I thought even if was $30,000 or $40,000 it would be huge."
Coleman said only one of the five horses lost a little bit of money, but the rest did very well.
Her staff, 10 of whom have been with her since she got Sultan Of Suede, have decided to donate a portion of their Christmas bonuses to the Flamborough Food Bank, and they hope other horsepeople will join them.
Who is Casie Coleman ?
This weeks 10-Question Segment from Exhibition Park Raceway features the Trainer of the Year in Canada in 2005, Casie Coleman.
She captured her first ever O’Brien award and trained one of the top three-year olds in North America in 2005, American Ideal. He set a world record of 1:47.4 in Lexington and electrified the crowd!
Question 1 - Congrats on your O’Brien award this year as Trainer of the Year in Canada. In a sport that is typically male dominated, how much of an impact has your success made or do you feel will make in horse racing in Canada?
Coleman: "I really think and hope that I can inspire other young horseman and woman in the harness racing industry to pursue their dreams and passion for harness racing. I know I am still quite young, but I had alot of bumps in the road on the way up every time I hit one I just kept my head up and my mind focused and it paid off. We need new people in our industry and we have to make sure the young guns keep coming up."
