How can the horsemen survive only racing 3 days a week at Northfield ? Is there other harness tracks close by to race at ? Why three days a week anyway ?

Lebanon (near Cincinnati) and Raceway Park (near Toledo) have been racing, while Scioto (near Columbus) opened last night. Obviously, all the good horses have left Ohio to race for bigger purses elsewhere, but there's plenty of places to race in Ohio. But the real question is how can horsemen make any money on the purses that are available?
I think two things mandate racing only three days a week: 1) During the "off-season", Northfield raced 4-5 days a week because there was less competition for their simulcast package; 2) Now that the other Ohio tracks are open, there aren't that many horses left to cover four harness tracks at one time, since many horses have left Ohio to race for larger purses

Most horses will still get in once a week. trackrat is spot on, although horse population has more to do with it than simulcast traffic (both are factors, though).
