Cowboys Dreamer Leads Field of Ten Into Miller Lite Courageous Lady
$109,000 Stake is Featured at Northfield Park Saturday

Northfield, OH- A well-matched field of ten three-year-old pacing fillies will contest Saturday’s Miller Lite Courageous Lady at Northfield Park, led by $10,000 supplemental entry Cowboys Dreamer. Not originally eligible to the race, her connections, Lou Carlo and Joe Berry, paid the extra fee and their filly was made a 5-2 favorite by Director of Racing Secretary Dave Bianconi. Racing in Canada, Cowboy’s Dreamer has win eight of ten races this year, taking a lifetime mark of 1:52.3 and earning just under $100,000. Kevin Wallis, who won the 2005 Courageous Lady with Beloved Angel, ships in from Michigan to drive the daughter of Hawaiian Cowboy- Mother’s Day Dream.

Second choice at 3-1 is 2009 Ohio Sires Stakes champ Hawk’s Cry Electra, who won six of seven races at two, banking $97,800. She won her 2010 debut last Friday at Lebanon Raceway in Southwest Ohio. Owned by Joe Muscara and trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr., her regular pilot Dan Noble will make the trip to Northfield to drive. Third choice, at 7-2 is Sand Windsor, who drew post ten, making her one of two horses to start from the second tier. Sand Windsor was impressive winning an overnight race at Northfield Friday in 1:55.

The race, which honors long-time Ohio horse owner Jack Tramonte who passed away earlier this month, also marks the return to Northfield of driver Greg Grismore. Grismore won driving championships at Northfield in 2003, 2004 and 2005, before departing for the East Coast. He has been listed to drive two horses, Allswelthatendswel and Retrieve A Rose. Driver choices will be updated by e-mail Thursday at about 10 AM.

First race post time on the 14-race card at Northfield Saturday is 7 PM Eastern, with the Miller Lite Courageous Lady scheduled as race 12, with an 11:05 PM Post Time.

I don't recall watching any races at NF where they had a horse out of the 10 hole.

Just curious as to what would the winning opportunities out of the 10 as compared to the 7, 8 and 9 slots?

Also when are we getting those tiny tim betting stations, that you liked a lot, at Northfield?

I believe Northfield had one race with ten starters in the last couple of years, but way back when, they customarily had ten or eleven starters for OSS events, but we're talking over 20 years ago. Supposedly, the horsemen don't like that many starters because of the traffic congestion on the half mile track... the outside racing tier starts almost immediately. As a bettor, I remember cashing more than a few exotic tickets with the #10 in the mix.

When the Big Triple was first introdcued (mid-seventies) all the trifecta races (first an dlast) were contested with ten horses. Ten hole was better than the 7-8, worse than the 9. Now w euse it only for stakes races.

We will get Tiny Tims when Amtote moves into the 21st century.

Actually, Giss, I had a winning ticket on the first trifecta race at Northfield in the 70s. It paid $270 on a $3 wager (there were no $1 boxes) and it was the ninth and final race of each program. The horse that finished third was named Hal's Vic and he had to withstand a photo for show. I believe the other two horses were Jerry Way and Dixie Laird horses, but not sure of the actual names. There was only one trifecta per night. And there were only eight horses in the field.

By 1977-78, it was the 1st and 10th. I raced in a bunch of them-- in fact got my first win at a mile in a first race tri that had been moved from 3/4 to a mile to be the triple.
May have started before that and been just the 9th-- you are probably older than me ;D.

That was an outstanding, aggressive drive by Aaron Merriman in the Courageous Lady Pace on Saturday night. When he realized that no one was leaving from the outside, he exploded out of the hole at the 1/4 and flew past Wallis. Aaron was able to get a breather going to the half and withheld Hawk's Cry Electra going to the 3/4 but whew, Gris was coming full bore with Allswelthatendswl at the wire... another couple of feet and Grismore wins. Great drives by Aaron and Grismore.

According to Aaron, he had no choice. The filly was really fired up and was trying to run over the horse in front of her-- fortunately, there was room for him to get out.
