Friday Night, June 4, 2010 Recap: Nostalgia was the order of the day (or night, in this case) as Ridge Park Square in Brooklyn hosted it's weekly "Cruise-In" Friday night with vintage cars from the 50s and 60s, while (presumably) the Mr. Chicken franchise across from Northfield Park hosted a similar event. Meanwhile, the Trackrat waxed nostalgic about the time when he used to be able to pick a winner at the track. Seems like ages.
Kangaroox was the only member of our handicapping crew to post a profit last night as he cashed $75 worth of exacta tickets in the fifth race for $562.50 (37.5 x $15) and a $5 exacta in the seventh race for $68.50. Jimhorseman was able to fashion a winning $20 exacta in the fifth race for $150 (10 x $15), while Trackrat threw some darts at the tenth race, keying the #9 with the field in a $1 trifecta worth $144.80.
It's around 80 degrees in Cleveland today (Saturday), very muggy, with thunderstorms lurking in the area. Good luck to everyone on tonight's card.

Saturday Night, June 5, 2010 Recap: It took a day to shake off all the rust from waiting all week to handicap a Northfield card, but the Believer rebounded from his tap-out in May with a $10 trifecta worth $1163 in the tenth race last night. His formulaic wagering strategy of keying the rail horse with mostly inside horses scored that nice trifecta mutuel payoff and a couple of near misses. Kangaroox made it two programs in a row with a modest profit, this time collecting $691.50 on his $500 outlay, cashing $50 worth of exacta tickets in the fourth and seventh races and topping that off with a $15 win ticket, also in the seventh race.
Other winning wagers last night included Hundredtowin with his signature wager producing $490 when his choice in the sixth race crossed the finish line first (Celebrity Wonder); Cliff's $50 wager on #2 Native Flower in the third race was good for $140; Jimhorseman cashed a $10 trifecta in the eleventh race for $339 (5 x $67.80); and Trackrat stumbled upon a winning $2 trifecta ticket in the first race for $128.80.
Good luck to everyone on Monday night's card.

Monday Night, June 7, 2010 Recap: The weather cooled off a bit last night but Kangaroox stayed hot with $10 worth of winning trifecta tickets in the tenth race for $437 (5 x $87.40) and a $1 trifecta in the twelfth race for $299.60, chipping away at the Believer's early lead. The Believer had net winnings of $9 with a $10 trifecta returning $129 in the ninth race, just barely covering his program outlay of $120. Cliff collected $140 on his $100 win ticket on #1 Rapid City in the thirteenth race, while Therealmuljuice cashed a small $1 trifecta in the third race for $32.60. Hundredtowin expanded his wagering repertoire with a $100 WPS wager in the seventh race, good for $620 when #4 Artistic Tribute crossed the finish line first.
Well, Trackrat is going to take a nap until Friday (yawn) when exciting live racing returns to Northfield (yawn). Concession update: the concession stand had no hot chocolate available last night (yawn).

Friday Night, Jun 11, 2010 Recap: Handicapping contest wagers involving driver Aaron Merriman were thrown into the winds of chance Friday night after Aaron's serious driving accident in the afternoon at The Meadows. One handicapper who appears to have benefitted by Merriman's absence was Jimhorseman, who had used #8 Broadway Petera as part of his successful $20 exacta box in the third race. While Jim got Wyatt Irvine as a replacement driver, he probably got better odds without Aaron driving. Broadway Petera went off at more than 6-1 odds and the resulting 8-1 exacta paid $283.80 on a $2 wager. Jim collected $2838 on his $20 exacta wager.
Kangaroox also liked Broadway Petera, but placed $100 win and $50 place/show wagers worth $750 and $260. He also cashed $20 place and $100 show wagers on #3 Island Idol in the thirteenth race, good for another $272. Earlier in the program, The Believer cashed a $20 trifecta box in the first race for $174.
Best wishes to Aaron Merriman (as if he reads this board) as he recovers from a second serious injury to his wrists. Any speculation that Aaron's absence at Northfield will entice Greg Grismore to change his Meadows/Scioto commute to a Meadows/Northfield one, or has one bridge too many been burned?

Saturday Night, June 12, 2010 Recap: I know that Sam Schillachi was the driving champ up in Buffalo or Batavia a lifetime ago and he can still get the best horse in a race home in front, but THREE in a row? Enough said!! It was a good night for most of our handicapping crew as Jimhorseman continues his quest to wrest the handicapping crown from a dormant Cliff. Jim jumped all over #5 Caramel Dumpling in the first race, collecting $350 on a $50 WPS wager and another $370 on a 5-2 exacta. The Believer also cashed a $50 exacta in the first race. Trainer Buck Hollar has this 9-year-old gelding in top racing form.
Scojer cashed six separate wagers throughout the night for a total of $816.10. Therealmuljuice cashed only one wager but it was a $1 trifecta in the program finale for $935.10. Kangaroox cashed a $100 show wager on #1 Winter Cruise in the seventh race for $130. Trackrat, wearing dark shades and hoping no one recognized him, cashed a $2 trifecta in the fourth race for $45.60.
More than a third of the way through the June contest, Jimhorseman sits atop the leader board with $4487 in his bankroll, while Kangaroox has $3669.10 and The Believer trails with $3116.

Monday Night, June 14, 2010 Recap: With defending champion Cliff still dormant at the paramutel windows, Jimhorseman continues to pile it on, this time to the tune of $1102.50, garnered from a series of $50WP wagers in five races last night. Jim was successful in four of those five races, including a winner at 8-1 and a place finisher at 9-1. Kangaroox collected $155 on a $25 show wager in the second race and a $75 win wager in the tenth race, but failed to cover his wagering outlay. He maintains his runnerup position on the tote board.
Well, nothing to do tonight but watch the NBA Finals or the Indians vs the Mets (yawn). See you back here on Friday.

Friday Night, June 18, 2010 Recap: By all reports, it was a beautiful night at the track starting with the first race where an undistinguished five year old trotting mare by the name of Ms Denali lowered her life-time best by almost five full seconds in winning the opening race by nine lengths in 158.4.
Lately, EVERY night is a beautiful night at the track for Jimhorseman, who had his second $1100 night in a row, with $5 trifectas in the third and fourth races for $172 and $1001.50, adding to his contest lead even more. Scojer woke up from his wagering coma to collect $1070 with a $100 WP wager on #5 American Grace K in the second race and another $668.80 with a $1 trifecta wager in the same race. The Believer cashed a $5 trifecta in the third race for $172.
Saturday night will be hot and humid at the Route 8 oval with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees and a possibility of thunderstorms in the area. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

Saturday Night, June 19, 2010 Recap: Commuting driver Dan Charlino was the key figure in Jimhorseman's two winning wagers Saturday night, winning the second race with 15-1 Delivered Rules and the ninth race with betting favorite Kinnick. Jim cashed a $20 exacta in the second race for $784 (10 x $78.40) and a $10 trifecta in the ninth for another $1645 (5 x $329) in winnings. Former four-time handicapping champion Kangaroox, enjoying a a return to his past prognosticating form, cashed $7 worth of trifecta tickets in the eighth race for $2853.20 (3.5 x $815.20). Trackrat, still looking for hot chocolate, cashed a $1 trifecta in the ninth race for $164.50.
Almost reluctant to mention it, like the dugout during a no-hitter, but Jimhorseman is in a ZONE!! It seems like a long-time since someone not named Cliff has been this red-hot in the handicapping contest. Hope some of Northfield's real cash is flowing up towards Buffalo. Good capping and good luck Jim!!

Monday Night, June 21, 2010 Recap: With a heat wave in progress in Northern Ohio, the two board leaders cooled off a little bit last night but not enough for the rest of us to gain much ground. Therealmuljuice cashed three $1 trifecta tickets and one $10 trifecta box ticket for a total of $748.80 in winnings, while Cliff's $100 win ticket and $9 trifecta key wager using #3 House of Green in the sixth race returned a total of $561.30. Trackrat had a tiny $2 trifecta in the third race for $18.40 and a $100 exacta in the thirteenth race for an additional $530. Jimhorseman's $20 exacta and $5 trifecta in the third race returned $52 and $46, respectively. Finally, Hundredtowin had $100 to place on #5 Cat's Run in the second race for $170 (50 x $3.40).
Well, we're off until Friday when we'll all get together for another fun night of handicapping Northfield Park. Remember, only three cards left in the June handicapping contest and then we'll take a break for at least a month. Good luck to everyone.

Friday Night, June 25, 2010 Recap: It was a night of futility in a season of futility. Cliff, who was perilously close to tapping out this month, squeezed a $44 profit out of his $500 in wagers last night, collecting on a $100 win wager on #2 Silvers Luck in the tenth race for $170, along with another $200 in superfecta winnings in the same race and then adding a $30 late DD for another $174. Folks, if this isn't the bottom we're wagering on, it's pretty close!!
Right now, we're looking at Jimhorseman on top of the heap with $7225 and Kangaroox sitting below him with $4944.80. Anything can (and does) happen tonight and Monday night as we close out the June handicapping contest with the return of Greg Grismore tonight (at least for this one card).
Good luck. Humid with a chance of thunderstorms tonight!!

Saturday Night, June 26, 2010 Recap: It seemed like our handicapping was just a little out of sync with what transpired on the track last night, as several handicapping "just missed" converting large trifecta wagers into their bankrolls. As it stood, The Believer and Cliff both posted profits but not enough to make up much ground in the distance to Jimhorseman's substantial lead. Taylor cashed a $15 trifecta ticket in the fifth race for $712.50; Trackrat also liked those numbers (9-1-3), but his $10 ticket returned only $475. Cliff's $100 win ticket on #7 Tessalation in the thirteenth race returned $650 (50 x $13). Jimhorseman cashed a $20 trifecta in the fourth race for $300 (10 x $30), while Therealmuljuice cashed a $10 trifecta in the eleventh race for $105 (5 x $21). Finally, Kangaroox's $1 trifecta in the ninth race was good for $108.80.
Look for more humid weather tomorrow night with a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day and evening. According to the morning line entries, there will be NO TOP TIER DRIVERS at Northfield on Monday night: no Charlino, no Stahl, no Grismore. It will be anything can happen night!! Good luck on the last night of the June handicapping contest.

Monday Night, June 28, 2010 Recap: The monthly handicapping crown has been wrested away from Cliff, at least temporarily, as Jimhorseman captures the June title with a final bankroll of $7151. Jim ended the month with positive momentum, cashing a $20 exacta in the first race for $438 and a $20 early daily double for $168. True to his word, Cliff did go down swinging, hitting a $5 Pick Five for $771.50, too little, too late! The Believer also ramped up his handicapping, cashing two $5 trifecta tickets and one $10 trifecta ticket for a total of $1021.50 on the night, good enough to almost scratch his way back to his original $2500 bankroll. Kangaroox held onto a distant second place with $299.20 in Monday night winnings, while Trackrat hammered the 3-6 exacta in the fourth race for $805 (25 x $32.20).
Well that's it until August. By then, Ohioans should have a better idea of when video slot machines will start to appear at Ohio's seven parimutuel racetracks. It's a start, and while it won't put Ohio on par with neighboring states, it should improve things for our horsemen. Good luck to everyone. Have a safe Fourth of July and let's keep some discussion going this month in other threads on this forum!!
