At one time, I remarked about the lack of aggressive driving at Yonkers and Jimhorseman responded with the observation that he thought they raced conservatively in order to get a little piece of a big purse, rather than try aggressively for the winner's check and perhaps not even hit the board.
After watching Yonkers consistently for the last couple of weeks, I'm inclined to believe that now.
Jim Pantaleano must send Tom Aldrich a fruit basket every holiday for banning him from Northfield so that he could go on to Yonkers and make 5 times what he made driving at Northfield.

Trackrat:
With the steep decline of Northfield racing I have been desperately trying to find another half mile track to consistently wager. Many people told me that Yonkers was the place to go as the quality of racing was high and the pools great enough to make decent wagers into. I honestly have tried to become vested in Yonkers but I honestly find the racing boring or to perhaps use a less harsh word safe. Horses are lined up by the 1/8th pole; don't pull till the 5/8th pole and generally just wait for the top of the stretch to make their run for a check. With purses often at $30 or $40K I can't blame an owner for being ok with a 3rd or 4th place check. Just makes it tough for the racing fan.
On another subject Cliff once wrote a rant titled "Does the 8 horse ever win on a Saturday night?". I think the title needs to be updated to "Does the 7 or 8 horse ever try on a half mile track?" This weekend at my local racetrack; Batavia Downs, the 7 or 8 did not come near the top two places with the exception of perhaps the best driver; Jim Morrill Jr, bringing in an outside horse in stakes races. At Northfield the 7 or 8 was not in the top two spots Friday and even Saturday with big money purses the 7 was in the top two three times with a caveat. The 7 horse won a race where he got the top when the rail horse broke at the gate scattering the field a bit. Also the 7 horse was second twice. In one case there were only 6 horses in the race due to a scratch and two horses broke at the gate meaning the 7 horse finished second in what was a four horse race. The other spot the 7 horse finished second was similiar in that he left and tucked into a hole just before several horses broke stride behind him. Boring racing and short prices. I am so frustrated with the state of racing that I have decided to take significant time off from wagering and handicapping. I have always said when my hobby becomes an obligation or chore and I stop having fun I'll walk away. Sadly, it seems that time has come.

The best track IMH0 for wagering and watching ...( sorry it's not a half mile track ) is Pocono this season ...... plenty of action outside most of the mile , the drivers (PAVIA , MORRIL AND KAKALEY are top notch, very good horses and payouts on winning exotics are terrific.
