Caramel Dumpling - The 383rd start of his career
Caramel Dumpling scored his 10th victory this year on Wednesday, December 14, and the 72nd time he has been in the winner's circle throughout his harness racing career.
Caramel Dumpling is a son of Towner’s Big Guy from the Dexter Nukes mare Spicy Dumpling. Melissa LeVan has owned the gelding since he was a yearling and regularly uses Calvin Hollar or Herbert LeVan to train. Either Robin Miller or Roy Burns usually drives.
Caramel Dumplings has consistently been on the track throughout his ten year-old racing career. His most recent win was his 55th start of 2011 and the 383rd of his career. Besides his 72 wins, he has earned 60 seconds and 56 third place finishes. Caramel Dumpling has lifetime earnings of $247,241 and took a career best mark of 1:53 as a four year-old at Scioto Downs.
Starting with that 4 year-old season, Carmel Dumpling has raced in excess of 40 times every year. “He is a solid horse that shows up every week,” commented trainer Calvin Hollar. “He is great to train and doesn’t do anything wrong.” Hollar says that Caramel Dumpling thrives at Northfield. “He really likes the banked turns.”
According to Hollar, the plan is to continue to race Caramel Dumpling until age forces him to retire. The rules of the United States Trotting Association require standardbreds to cease racing at 14, although they may compete in non-parimutuel matinee races in their 15th year. “I would love to retire him at Northfield,” says Hollar. “He should be able to race until the end, and he has no real problems that would keep him from racing. He’s pretty tough.”
WE’LL MISS TWO FRIENDS:
