Took a friend from Chicago to Northfield Park Friday night for dinner and the races. I was very disappointed (and embarrassed) to see how far Northfield's food service has fallen. I won't be taking ANYONE to Northfield Park for any reason until they show some interest in the customer, rather than the customer's dollar.
Glad to see that Dan Gilbert's Horshoe Casino will have a Corky and Lenny's AND a Bar Simon area in their food service part of the renovated Higbee building. Everything Dan Gilbert does is top shelf. So, maybe I'll have to change my name from Trackrat to Blackjack Rat?

You have to remember that only they know how to run their failing business. I went to get a fish dinner from the concession stand (one of the better values), only to find it is no longer offered. Gee, racing on Fridays in Lent....maybe offer a fish dinner.....seems like a no-brainer. Maywood offers a $7.95 lenten special, and I believe a Prime Rib special all year on Fridays for $8.50. NFLD just keeps their WAY overpriced menu and average food. At least it seems like they are offending less and less people in the clubhouse week by week. And I think I've gotten used to not going to the track on Saturdays as well, that was a brilliant idea.

If you accept that Northfield is catering to the gambling dollar instead of the racing patron, it all becomes crystal clear. But once they alienate the hard core patronage that has supported Northfield for the last 50 years, how are they going to regain that support? Why would I play video slots at Northfield when I can go to Dan Gilbert's brand new casino downtown, taking in a top shelf experience?

Wouldn't it be great if Northfield leased out their restaurant space to a recognized restaurant operator, like an Applebee's, or Texas Roadhouse and it actually became a popular destination to go to for dinner? Northfield would eliminate their operating overhead and enjoy the spillover patronage who would then wager at the track.
I know. I did too many drugs in the 60s.

I've thought that for years. Only issue might be on the 3-4 big race nights of the year and needing the clubhouse those nights for racing patrons and the restaurant not getting their expected turnover of customers.
Now that they have closed the upstairs concession stand, I wonder what ridiculous amount they might want to lease that space. I've got a friend that runs a trailer at the fairs and rib burn off's that sells Phlly steaks, etc....wonder if some actual good food could make a profit? But you probably couldn't under cut their crazy prices like $2.70 for a large soda that costs about a nickel. You can make more profit by selling more items at lower prices than fewer items at high prices.
