Tony Morgan Goes For 1,000 At Northfield Thursday/Friday
Northfield, OH- Harness Racing’s leading driver, Tony Morgan, will drive at Northfield Park Thursday and Friday as he attempts to become just the second driver in history to reach 1,000 wins in a season. Morgan has 13 drives Thursday and is expected to drive in all 14 races Friday. Morgan has 993 wins on the season, and with his home track, Dover Downs, on a holiday break until Saturday, Morgan would likely have fallen short of the millennium mark. Walter Case, Jr., holds the all-time mark of 1,076 wins, set in 1998. Morgan won dash-winning championships in 1995, 1996 and 1997, but his previous best win total was 853, set in 1996.
A native Buckeye and Ohio State fan, Morgan is donating his 5% driving fees to cover the cost of a paddock buffet and large screen television on January 8, 2006, when the Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Florida Gators in the Tostitos BCS Championship game. That will allow Northfield’s horsemen to catch the match-up between races on that Monday’s 14-race card.

If all the other drivers gorge themselves on the buffet, then their horses will be towing around extra weight and Tony will have an easier time getting to the milestone (insert your own conspiracy theory here) Very nice gesture by him in all seriousness. Our sport gets a bad rap and the positive things seem to go mostly unnoticed. Kudos to the Monticello colony by the way for donating their share of the purse from a few races around Christmas to a local charity.
