Book that win at Northfield
March 10, 2007
Gerald Goldberg's Look To Book posted her first win of the season Friday in the $8,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace, after posting 13 victories last year. Look to Book won with Todd Jones filling in for injured regular pilot Elliott Deaton, who will undergo shoulder surgery next week.
Polo Jenn cut fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:26.4, battling In The Mist N for most of the second half of the mile, before losing a tight photo to the winner, who has now earned $87,766 under Mark Deaton's tutelage. Nells Bells, driven by 18-year-old Matt Kakaley, was third.
Kakaley, who turns 19 on March 19, made his local debut after competing at Pompano Park, where he had picked up 37 wins since becoming "legal" to drive at pari-mutuel tracks. He piloted two Mickey Burke-trainees. In addition to the third-place effort with Nells Bells, he picked up a fourth with Real Valentine. Brett Miller won three races on the card in his return from Pompano, including his initial drive with Jubilee Chorus in the second race.
Driver Joey Mapes suffered back injuries and was taken in for observation when Eagle Creek Beauty made a bad break in the final turn of the seventh race and went down, taking Amber's Punch and My Rising Star with her. Their drivers, Chris Page and Jason Thompson, were unhurt. There was no further report on Mapes' condition at the conclusion of the card, but he was conscious and joking with medics when transported.
