The first annual Northfield Park Handicapper's Weekend! I've been thinking about this for a long time now, and it's been brought up before, so I know there is some interest. The Believer tells me that October 22nd is the first anniversary of the "Handicapping Northfield Park" board. This board has been a great success, and a big hit with many - both members and guests! Wouldn't it be great to have an annual "Handicapper's Weekend" at the track where we could all get together and enjoy food, drink, and racing at the place we all talk about? I'm thinking October 19/20 - very close to one year from this board's start. I have talked to "The Giss" about it, and he seems very willing to help with arrangements! He mentioned getting us a special price on the buffet as a group, doing a race name or two for us (we could sponsor a blanket?), And MAYBE even have a couple of 'cappers on the show for a race or two (not sure about that). We could have some handicapping games and contests, and maybe even a trophy for the Champ of the Weekend! Just overall have fun and get to know each other! I would really like to see this happen! I know it's a long drive for many of us (it's 200 miles for me) and I would have to make lodging arrangements, etc. but for the great time we would have, the friends we would make, and the memories ( and maybe even a few bucks!) we would take home with us it would be worth it! The weekend would be open to all Board Members and their guests (can I bring Zed? - lol) and of course we would not want to exclude Brian for all his contributions to the board. I wanted to get this out early enough to allow plenty of time for us to make plans/arrangements. So............. how many of us would like to attend an event like this? We have almost two months to work out the details, but I'd like to know soon how many are interested so we can get the jog cart rolling on this! You can post your responses here in this thread, send me a PM, or email me at Mark@BlackWaterPCM.com .......... Also, If anyone would like to help out in coordinating this event (especially you local guys), please let me know that as well. I look forward to meeting many of you at Northfield in October! BW

This is great!
Moondog, you get the prize for being the first to respond, and your offer to help out is much appreciated - since I have about as much experience coordinating events like this as I have picking the horses! I can coordinate chaos with no problem......... LOL!
And we've got Scojer, too!
Perhaps after we get a few more responses, we could set up a "committee" to handle all the ins and outs.....? Of course, I would like to hear suggestions from everyone about what they would like to have happen that weekend, come up with ideas for games, contests, other activities, etc.
Looks like the "jog cart's rolling"!

Wow! Thanks, Keith!
OK, folks, we've got the Giss all fired up about this event - let's see some responses! I know some of you local guys would probably be at the track that weekend anyway, so....... The Belieiver's backing this 100% though he may not be able to make it (illness in the family - but I'm still working on him!). We've got Moondog ready to help out with the details, and Scojer gave it his thumbs up - I'm hoping we'll get a small crowd together and have a great couple of nights at the track!
So let's hear it folks! I'd like to hear some suggestions on what you all would like to have happen that weekend, who would like to be on The Giss's show (maybe), a design for a blanket (if we decide to sponsor one or two) and anything else that might help us plan this event!
Keith, when would you need a final head count?
See ya at the track!

Howard ;D Thank's Moondog, for your help! I've been out of town working so much lately, I haven't been able to do much here! It looks like we have enough interest to go ahead with plans (thanks, Jay), and you know I'll have MY head counted, and I hope my wife can get Friday afternoon off and come with me. So there's TWO straight off! I think we should discuss what we want to have happen that weekend - do we keep it simple and low-key, or do we have a big shin-dig with champagne and naked dancing girls and all that........ ;D? I'd be willing to chip in to sponsor a blanket or two, posssibly come up with a little on-site handicapping contest, wagering games........... So come on, folks! Lets get Moondog a head count (wanna give us a deadline?) and hear some ideas on what we want to have happen that weekend! It's only a month away! BW

We need input, folks, so don't be shy with suggestions or desires here - we're all in this together, right? See ya at the track! (Oct 19/20) BW

Looks like the jog cart's rolling pretty well right now!
We have at least 7 who gave a response, and I'm sure more of us will belly up to the bar in the next few days or so. Remember, guys, it's less than a month away! The Giss will need to know how many of us will be there Saturday evening for the buffet - Friday will be just an informal gathering (most likely in the pub) to get to know each other, have a few drinks and laughs, throw some money away...........
Jay has been looking into getting us a blanket made for a race on either Friday or Saturday night - the cost will be about $85-90. With 6 of us chipping in, it will cost us about $15 each - with 10, Less then $10! We'll have more info on the blanket soon!
Keith, what info do you need for getting a race named for us, setting up the Saturday evening festivities, etc. ? Anything I can do to help from here I'm more than willing to! We also have Moondog's and Jay's offer to help, and The Believer is behind us 100%! Let us know what we can do to help!
So here's what I see happening on our Handicapper's Weekend:
FRIDAY Oct 19 6:00 PM - I'll be in the pub, grab us a table, post a sign "Northfield Handicappers". I'll be the gray haired guy with the Cherokee features. The first round is ON ME!! 7:03 PM - POST TIME!! (usually). I watch, listen, and learn from you pros on how to wager, maybe we put up some group bets...... just have fun!
SATURDAY Oct 20 6:00 PM - the buffet opens, we gather and have dinner, take up as much space as we can (I'm expecting a BIG turnout! LOL) The first round is on the big winner from Friday night! 7:04 PM - POST TIME!! Handicapping games and contests, perhaps a group pic with our winning horse...... more fun, friendship, and memories!
SUNDAY Oct 21 9:00 AM - Breakfast at some local Waffle House or Denny's or some such........... then I have to go home and get back to the grind!
This is just how I see things happening on our weekend at Northfield - In my opinion, the more casual and relaxed the better. Once again, I'd LOVE to hear suggestions, comments, etc. on how to make our first annual Handicapper's Weekend a great success! So let's hear it folks!

I am working both nights, unless my girls win the sectional semi-final, in which case we may have to play a final on Saturday night. Then I will tape my picks. Weather permitting, my picks will be from the winners circle. I will have you guys on camera with me (as long as you all behave) and I will have one or two of you give your picks, alog with me for your race.
