Friday Night, April 2, 2010 Recap: The weather was great, the track was fast and The Believer served notice that he is the one to catch in April, cashing a $10 trifecta in the eleventh race for $417. Harness27 cashed four out of his seven wagers for $122. Jimhorseman's $20 exacta in the eighth race was good for $68, while Scojer's $25 exacta in the same race produced $85. Finally, defending champion Trackrat cashed a tiny trifecta in the second race for $14.80.
Thunderstorms are due this afternoon with a slight chance of rain tonight. Mild temperatures in the low 70s. Good luck to everyone on tonight's program.

Saturday Night, April 3, 2010 Recap: Although it's still early in this month's contest, it's already shaping up to be a very competitive challenge with three sharp finishers from last month asserting an early claim to the April handicapping crown. The Believer and Cliff both nailed a $100 win wager on 12-1 Caramel Dumpling in the ninth race, producing $1310 in winnings for that pair of cappers. Earlier in the card, Cliff cashed a $50 daily double worth $260. Jimhorseman had two successful wagers, a $40 exacta in the second race for $120 and a $10 trifecta in the sixth race for $1381 (5 x $276.20).
Hundredtowin cashed two $100 win wagers, in the tenth and eleventh races for $380 and $190 respectively. Trackrat cashed a $5 trifecta in the first race, a $3 trifecta in the second race and a $1 trifecta in the twelfth race for a total of $325 in winnings.
Rain is expected early on Monday but should be cleared by post time with temperatures in the 70s. Good luck to everyone on tonight's card.

Monday Night, April 5, 2010 Recap: There were only two virtual trips to the cashier's window last night and both were $100 win wagers, one by Scojer on #7 Mickey Deez in the sixth race for $240 (50 x $4.80) and the other one by Hundredtowin on #5 Little Gary Perry in the tenth race for $170 (50 x $3.40).
Back to the drawing board for the rest of us as the weather stays warm for Tuesday night's thirteen race card. The track should be dry and fast. Good luck!

Tuesday Night, April 6, 2010 Recap: These weeknight Northfield programs are tough ones to handicap, even with pretend money. Hundredtowin converted his $100 WPS wager on #1 Glascow Gamer in the eighth race into $320 when the undistinguished 4-year-old pacer finished second by a nose. Jimhorseman's $30 WP wager on #9 Toronado Mindale in the twelfth race produced $243 in winnings for our Buffalo buddy and $1000 in purse money for The Professor. Kangaroox cashed two $10 exactas in the sixth and eleventh races for $110 and $164, respectively, while the Believer's successful $5 trifecta in the eighth race paid $72 (2.5 x $28.80). Finally, Harness27 cashed a $2 exacta in the second race for $6.80 and a $10 WP wager in the sixth race for $33 (5 x $6.60).
Looking ahead to Friday night, we're looking at temperatures in the high 30s at post time with rain or snow possible. Back to Spring like temperatures on Saturday.

Friday Night, April 9, 2010 Recap: There was a brief return to winter racing last night but the hot chocolate machine was working and handicapping was good for three of our veteran board members. Therealmuljuice and Trackrat struck early and often as both cashed a $1 trifecta in the first race for $1359.80, using 23-1 three-year-old filly trotter Yesternite on top of their exotic tickets. Trainer/driver Scott Cox sat patiently until after the halfway mark and went three wide approaching the 3/4 mark to circle the field and trot home in 201.4 for the victory. Therealmuljuice added a $10 trifecta in the third race for $248, a $50 exacta in the sixth race for $320 and a $1 trifecta in the tenth race for an additional $39.10, hauling home a total of $1966.90 for the night.
Trackrat added a $1 trifecta in the seventh race for $123.60 and a straight $20 trifecta in the eleventh race for $210, for a total of $1693.40 on the night. The Believer had $30 worth of winning trifecta tickets on the 5-3-1 combination in the tenth race for $1173 (15 x $78.20) to add to his April contest lead.
Aaron Merriman continues to lead all North American harness drivers, racing afternoons at The Meadows in Washington, PA and at Northfield Park in the evenings. Look for a slight warmup today, into the 60s in Northeast Ohio, with a dry track tonight. Northfield is doing a great job with the renovation of the ground floor area at the track with new flat screen, high definition tvs, betting carrels and standup areas with plenty of counter space. Hopefully, they have plans to renovate the betting carrels in the clubhouse restaurant and upgrade the table top tv sets. Good luck on tonight's card.

Saturday Night, April 10, 2010 Recap: Judging from our contest results, last night was a good night to take off. There were only two winning wagers in our contest last night, with Hundredtowin picking up $230 on his $100 win wager on #7 Expresso Forte in the fifth race and Kangaroox cashing a $10 exacta on the 5-4 combination one race earlier for $57 (5 x $11.40).
Good luck to everyone on Monday night's thirteen race card.

Monday Night, April 12, 2010 Recap: "Double-digit" Dan Charlino took advantage of sizzling fractions by runnerup Extravagant Manner in the twelfth race NW250 trot to capture that event behind Master Buckin Uhl at 27-1 odds, posting a new lifetime mark of 159.0. Charlino just got up at the wire to win the photo. Contest beneficiary of Dan's patient drive was Therealmuljuice who had keyed Master Buckin Uhl over the field in a $1 trifecta worth $459.80. Muley cashed two other contest wagers, a $20 exacta in the seventh race for $216 and a $2 trifecta in the eleventh race for $62.40 to inch up closer to The Believer, who still leads the April contest by a diminishing lead.
Kangaroox, getting dangerously close to tapping out, cashed $10 worth of trifecta tickets in the seventh race for $261 (5 x $52.20).
Looking ahead to Tuesday night's program, it's raining heavily in the Cleveland area this morning but it is expected to clear by post time tonight. Track might be a little soft but probably not enough to be a factor. The temperature will hover around 50. Good luck to everyone.

Tuesday Night, April 13, 2010 Recap: It was another night of mediocre mayhem at the Route 8 oval as contest winners were scarce for our hardy handicapping crew. Jimhorseman concentrated all of his contest cash on the eleventh race, crafting a $10 trifecta key wager worth $261 (5 x $52.20) and a $50 exacta box worth $185 (25 x $7.40). He still JUST managed to turn a profit on the night. The Believer struck early, in the first race with a $5 trifecta worth $235.50 but then fell silent the rest of the night. Trackrat also had the first race trifecta but only for the $1 payout of $47.10. Finally, Kangaroox cashed a $20 exacta in the ninth race for $90.
We'll be right back here Friday night for more contest action at the Home of the Flying Turns [when was that term last emphasized?]. Good luck and stay safe.

Friday Night, April 16, 2010 Recap: In limited contest action Friday night, two out of our three players made a profit with Jimhorseman netting an $1800 profit to bounce right back into contention in the April handicapping contest. Jim had a $2 Pick Four for $587.20 and a $5 trifecta in the tenth race for $1736 (2.5 x $694.40). Kangaroox concentrated his $104 in wagers all in the third race, garnering a return of $77 for a $5 exacta box and $141.40 for a $40 trifecta.
Good luck to everyone in the coming week. As Spring emerges, we should see some of the developing 3-year-olds return to the track, always a good opportunity to spot a sleeper or two.

Saturday Night, April 17, 2010 Recap: Brisk Fall-like weather hung over Northeast Ohio for a second day as the standardbreds went postward Saturday night. The Believer added another $54 to his April contest lead with a $10 trifecta in the fifth race good for $234 (5 x $46.80), more than offsetting his $180 wagering outlay. Kangaroox stubbornly staves off tapping out this month with a $5 exacta and $2 trifecta in the second race for $15.40 and $61.20, respectively and a $10 exacta in the thirteenth race for $66 (5 x $13.20). Hundredtowin collected $290 on his $100 win wager on #6 Snappy Sport in the second race. Driven by Ryan Stahl, Snappy is trained by Kent Sherman who ranks sixth in wins among North American trainers in 2010. Finally, Trackrat cashed a $2 trifecta in the second race for $61.20 and a $10 trifecta in the sixth race for $291 (5 x $58.20).
More than halfway home in the April handicapping contest, The Believer sits atop the leader board with $3587.50 with three other veteran cappers closely bunched around the $2700 mark. Let's get ready for an interesting stretch drive. Good luck to everyone on Monday night's card.

Monday Night, April 19, 2010 Recap: As the weather begins to heat up again, so does our handicapping challenge as Cliff starts to put heat on The Believer while Trackrat rallies from far back. Betting conservatively on a difficult wagering program, Cliff cashed a $50 late daily double for $765 (25 x $30.60) to pull within $65 of our Canadian handicapping friend. Trackrat converted a four-horse $10 trifecta box in the twelfth race into $524 in winnings.
In other contest betting action, Scojer's $50 WP wager on #4 Three Sox Missing in the thirteenth race was good for a return of $375 (25 x composite $15.00), while Kangaroox continues to evade elimination with $4 worth of trifecta tickets in the twelfth race for $244.10 and a $1 trifecta in the ninth race for $34.50.
Good weather continues tonight. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

Tuesday Night, April 20, 2010 Recap: It was an ugly night of racing Tuesday night at the home of the Flying Turns with horses down all over the track and drivers injured. Here's wishing Russell Swartz a speedy recovery from a broken arm suffered in a serious spill before the start of the 10th race.
Therealmuljuice was the only capper to cash any tickets Tuesday night and even his three trifecta wins for $139.80 were not enough to offset his wagering outlay of $406.
Good luck to everyone on Friday night's Fillies and Mares program.

Friday, April 23, 2010 Recap: Wagering success on Friday night's Fillies and Mares program was limited to $10 trifectas by The Believer and Trackrat in the fifth race, good for $85, not much to write home about. As we head into the final four racing cards in the April contest, The Believer holds about a $200 lead over Cliff. Kangaroox has tapped out, but everyone else has a competitive bankroll left to challenge the two leaders.
Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

Saturday Night, April 24, 2010 Recap: T.S. Eliot wrote that "April is the cruellest month" and he had never even been to Northfield Park. Nontheless, April has been just brutal for our handicapping crew with winning wagers few and far between. EVERYONE is losing bankroll at this point. Cliff's $100 win wager on #2 Sunset Ball in the tenth race was good for $210 while his superfecta wager in the same race returned $66.70. Jimhorseman came back from Disneyworld a day too early, posting $54.50 in winnings against his outlay of $500. Therealmuljuice used Sunset Ball on top of his trifecta key wager in the tenth for $40.40.
Good luck to everyone on Monday night's card. Chance of rain.
